Deana Lawson is an American artist, educator, and photographer whose work revolves primarily around issues of intimacy, family, spirituality, sexuality, and Black aesthetics. Lawson makes portraits of black people in South Carolina, Swaziland, Jamaica, and Soweto, South Africa, as well as around her own Brooklyn neighborhood. She confronts viewers with a complex, densely layered, multifaceted vision of black identity, as embodied by strangers and neighbors alike, with whom she has established an intense rapport, however brief.
Lawson was awarded the Aaron Siskind Foundation's Individual Photographer's Fellowship grant, 2008-2009 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013. In 2017, her work was featured in the Whitney Biennial. Her photographs have been exhibited in a number of museums and galleries including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She is based in Brooklyn, New York.

Getting There: Take MARTA to Arts Center Station, rideshare to museum via Peachtree St., or park in metered spots on Peachtree. Decks are located off 15th street and off Arts Center Way, behind the museum. In Museum deck, take elevators to CAMPUS LEVEL. Auditorium is directly across courtyard from elevators.
